Why Long-Term Athletic Development Is What We Do
Wil Fleming – former IYCA Director of Sport Performance As a young athlete growing up, I played a lot of sports. I think a lot of people in my generation or older can identify with that statement. In the fall, you played football, volleyball, or soccer; in the winter, you played basketball or maybe wrestled or swam; in the spring, it was baseball/softball season or track season. In the summer, you played whatever—enjoyed baseball, played games outside, and were thankful that your neighbor had a trampoline! As the seasons of the year changed, the sport you played changed with it… More »

3 Things That Have Made My Programs Better
Wil Fleming I was recently asked to speak at the National High School Coaches Association annual meeting, and I heard one of my favorite coaching phrases over and over (it was a pretty common refrain). Most of the coaches at the convention were up for their respective sport’s national coach of the year award, so these were true experts. You can also imagine that the types of folks that are up for those awards are not newcomers to the game; they have been doing it for years and years, and as their nominations would suggest, they are the best of.. Imagination. It’s Role in Fitness
By Ethel Baumberg MPH, BA, Co-Owner Flyaroo Fitness The concept of #DreamBIG derived from a fleeting moment of clarity when we (FLYAROO Fitness founders Ethel Baumberg and Ashley Spicer) said out loud, “There’s a need for imaginative, fun fitness programs for kids aged 18 months-10 years; let’s imagine what that would be like.” From that moment on, we were using our imagination to envision ourselves years down the road, developing and selling a preschool fitness program that could touch the lives of thousands of children. Having dreams and aspirations is a result of using your imagination and visualization to.. More »
Long Term Athletic Development…with a Physical Therapist Twist
Keith J. Cronin, DPT, OCS, CSCS Don’t kids just seem to heal faster? I mean really, they get hurt one day and are limping, screaming, and crying all over the place and three days later are doing 100-meter sprints just fine. And whether this young athlete had a strained calf muscle or an irritated rotator cuff, compared to 50 or 60-year-olds with the same injury, kids respond much faster. When it comes to sports or strength and conditioning, young athletes are generally fun to work with. They are eager to learn, want to push, and are striving to achieve.. More »
Thoughts on Teaching Sprint Mechanics
By Jim Kielbaso In order to develop straight-ahead speed, the foundation must be laid with proper sprinting mechanics. Once an athlete’s mechanics are sound, additional training methods (strength training, plyometrics, weight vests, over-speed, sleds, etc.) can be incorporated. Without sound mechanics, additional training methods will yield less than optimal results. The main idea is to create as much horizontal force as possible in the shortest amount of time. Proper mechanics allow an athlete to take advantage of whatever force production capabilities he/she has. The two basic factors involved in speed are: Stride length Stride frequency Optimizing these two factors.. More »
What Every Trainer and Coach Should Know About Throwing Athletes
Keith J. Cronin, DPT, OCS, CSCS This is one of my favorite topics: baseball throwing. Perhaps it’s that I played collegiate baseball, that I did my doctoral research on softball and baseball pitching, or that I live in one of the greatest baseball towns (Go Cardinals!), but mostly it’s because I just love the game. Now, from this love also comes a great deal of concern as the game of baseball, with respect to throwing in younger athletes, has been under the microscope. Parents, coaches, and athletes commonly face a plethora of questions that never seem to have a straight.. More »

Inspiration Instead of Information
Alex Slezak – M.Ed, YFS-II, YSAS, HSSCS A wealth of information creates a poverty of attention. – Herbert Simon We live in the information age. It is a world where anything we could ever possibly want to learn is literally in the palm of our hands. Take a moment to pause and think deeply about that. This new world we live in has changed everything. In the past, coaches and teachers held the keys to knowledge. Information for kids was hard to come by and because it was scarce when the opportunity to listen to a coach or teacher attention.. More »
Effective Basketball Performance Training For Youth Athletes
By: JC Moreau, MS, FMS, USAW-SP Fifteen years of training men’s and women’s basketball players, from junior high through the professional ranks will teach you things. One of the many things it has taught me is that certain training protocols have clearly had the greatest positive impact on the performance and health of these athletes. The more I read about self-proclaimed “basketball-specific” trainers or methods, the more I am reminded of what these athletes really need. And it is not the latest gimmick, but the basic principles of sound performance-development. Despite the various ways we can define “sound performance training principles,”.. More »
Power Training for Faster Athletes
By Wil Fleming, IYCA Director of Sport Performance When breaking down speed training we break down the training into the two categories we can have the maximal impact: power and technique When it comes to training for power, we can augment athletic abilities through simple strength training, but more than that, we can really improve the technique through different forms of resisted sprinting. When we talk about technique, we focus on the area that athletes can control most: acceleration. Acceleration involves a number of factors that influence technique. Among those, we talk about posture, arm action, and the strike of.. More »

Strength in Numbers – Fitness Coaching Tips for Large Groups
by Mike Mejia, MS, CSCS, YFS-1, YNS President of B.A.S.E. Sports Conditioning Inc I love working with clients on a one on one basis. There is just something about being able to put my blinders on and give my undivided attention to one person’s needs during the course of a workout. I guess it is because I started out as a personal trainer, and to some extent, that is still where my passion lies. That said, I also thoroughly enjoy working with groups of athletes…even entire teams. The only caveat is that in a group setting, it can.. More »
